Beyond its nutritional potential, oyster mushroom production is showing opportunities for livelihood and enterprise development. In a 2015 survey conducted by PhilRice across its “Playamanan Plus” sites, 43% of it’s respondents consume mushroom at least once per month and oyster mushroom was the commonly consumed variety. The survey also shows interest in value-added mushroom products, such as mushroom chips/crackers and food supplements.
Furthermore, according to a more recent market assessment by Dr. Maria Joy Casano Iglesia from the Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges, assessing the market for white oyster mushroom in Luzon. The assessment examined consumers, buyers, sellers, and growers across Region III, Region IV-A, and the Bicol Region, there is a high demand for fresh oyster mushrooms, which were commonly used as meat substitute. It also identified a range of mushroom-based products already being distributed commercially such as, ice cream, mushroom chicharon, sisig, picked mushrooms, lumpia, embutido, tempura, etc.
These developments point to an opportunity—but also a challenge:
How can growers produce enough quality oyster mushrooms to meet an emerging market while maintaining productive and economically viable operations?
The answer may begin with the substrate.
The substrate serves as the growing medium for oyster mushroom production, and its composition can influence fruiting, yield, and production performance. Recognizing this, researchers from Capiz State University–Tapaz Satellite College evaluated different locally available materials and substrate combinations to determine which could provide better oyster mushroom production and economic returns.
The research resulted in the development of AgriMyco Substrate. Among the rice-straw-based substrate formulations evaluated, this formulation demonstrated the strongest overall production performance.
Under the controlled conditions of the study, oyster mushrooms grown using the AgriMyco Substrate formulation produced the most fruit bodies, heaviest fruiting bodies, and highest total yield compared with the other formulations tested. The differences in these key production parameters were statistically significant, demonstrating its superior performance under the conditions of the experiment. The formulation also recorded the highest return on investment among the treatments evaluated. These findings provide the research foundation for AgriMyco Substrate—a substrate formulation developed and comparatively evaluated to improve the productivity of oyster mushroom cultivation.
For potential technology adopters, the value of AgriMyco Substrate lies in its demonstrated performance. Rather than being based solely on a theoretical formulation, it was evaluated against other substrate combinations under controlled conditions and emerged as the better-performing formulation in the major production parameters assessed.
